Not knowing what is going to happen is a large part of why people put off a first appointment. So here is the whole thing, start to finish, with nothing left vague.
Before you arrive
We offer digital registration forms so most of the paperwork is done before you walk in. Filling in the insurance section matters more than it looks: once your appointment is scheduled, our team provides a complimentary verification of benefits, so we can tell you what your plan covers on the day rather than after.
If you have seen a dentist before, bring the practice name and roughly when you last visited. Records belong to you, and we can request them, including recent X-rays, so you are not re-exposed to imaging you have already had.
One more thing, and it is the most useful thing you can do: if you are nervous, say so when you book. It is not a confession. It means we allow a longer appointment and often a quieter time of day.
The examination
A first visit is a comprehensive exam, which means we look at more than the tooth that is bothering you. That includes each tooth and any existing fillings and crowns, the health of your gums measured and recorded so it can be compared at future visits, your bite and how your teeth meet, and the soft tissues — lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor and roof of your mouth — along with an oral cancer screening.
X-rays are taken where they are due. A lot of what matters is not visible when you open your mouth: decay between teeth where the surfaces touch, bone levels under the gums, infection at a root tip. We take images because they will change what we do, not on a fixed schedule regardless.
The part most people find useful
We show you what we found. On screen, enlarged, with the intraoral photograph or the X-ray in front of you. Being shown the crack in your own filling is a completely different experience from being told you need a crown.
Then you get a plan, in priority order, with costs. What needs doing now, what can wait, and what is simply worth keeping an eye on. If the plan is more than you want to take on at once, we sequence it: the urgent things first, the rest as it suits you. We do not start work you have not agreed to.
What we will not do
We will not lecture you. If it has been five years or fifteen, that is one of the most ordinary things about our day and it is not interesting to us as a moral matter, only as a clinical starting point.
We also will not spring a number on you in the chair. Unexpected news while you are lying back with your mouth open is one of the things patients tell us they found hardest elsewhere.
How long it takes
Plan on about an hour. If you are having a cleaning at the same visit, a little longer. If you would rather the first appointment be a conversation and an examination with no treatment at all, that is a completely normal way to start and you only have to ask.
