If you do not have dental insurance, putting off a checkup feels like the sensible financial choice. Nothing hurts, so nothing is wrong, and the money stays in your account. The trouble is that teeth do not work that way, and the delay is usually where the real cost comes from.
This is a plain look at what tends to happen when checkups get skipped, and what patients without insurance in Darien can do about it.
Why "nothing hurts" is not a reliable sign
The outer layer of a tooth, the enamel, has no nerves in it. A cavity can work its way through that layer for months without you feeling anything at all. By the time a tooth is sensitive to cold or aches when you bite, the decay has usually reached the softer layer underneath, where it moves faster.
The same is true of the places you cannot see. Decay between two teeth and bone loss under the gum are invisible in the mirror. They show up on digital X-rays, which is why an exam without them only tells part of the story.
How a small problem becomes a bigger one
The same tooth can need very different treatment depending on when it is caught:
- Caught early: a small cavity is cleaned out and repaired with a tooth-colored filling. It is one short appointment.
- Caught later: once decay reaches the nerve, the tooth needs a root canal to remove the infection, and usually a crown to protect what is left. That is more visits and more work.
- Caught too late: if too little healthy tooth remains, it may have to come out, and then there is a gap to deal with.
Each step costs more than the one before it, in money and in time off work. None of the later steps can be undone by going back and doing the earlier one. A filling is only an option while the problem is still filling-sized.
That is the honest case for a checkup when you are paying yourself: it is the cheapest point at which anything in your mouth can be found.
What we offer patients without insurance
We keep this simple. Our special offer for uninsured patients is $99, and it includes an exam and X-rays.
That visit gives you a clear picture: what is healthy, what needs watching, and what needs treatment. If something does need doing, we explain it, tell you what it involves, and you decide what happens next. Nobody is committed to anything by coming in for an exam.
To be clear about what the $99 covers: it is the exam and the X-rays. A cleaning or any treatment is separate, and we will go over that with you before anything is done.
If you do need treatment
Finding a problem is only useful if fixing it is realistic. Two things help here:
- We prioritize. Not everything has to be done at once. We will tell you what should be handled soon and what can safely wait, so you can plan around it.
- You can pay over time. We work with Cherry, a financing partner that lets you apply in a few minutes and spread the cost of treatment. Details are on our specials and financing page.
Signs it is worth booking sooner
If it has been more than a year, an exam is a good idea regardless. Move it up the list if you have noticed any of these:
- A tooth that reacts to cold, sweets, or biting down
- Food catching in the same spot every time you eat
- A rough or sharp edge your tongue keeps finding
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- An old filling that feels different than it used to
- A toothache that came and went
None of these means something serious has happened. They are the stage at which a problem is usually still small.
